WhatsApp Channels Introduces Four New Features
WhatsApp Channels, launched in the latter half of 2023 as a broadcasting tool for brands, celebrities, and public figures, is bringing exciting updates to its users. While not a novel concept, the arrival of Channels on one of the world's most popular messaging apps means millions can now receive direct updates from their favorite entities. Behind the scenes, WhatsApp developers have been working on new functionalities for Channels, including polls and sending voice messages, among others. These features are now being widely rolled out to users globally.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a channel post via WABetaInfo, announced the addition of four new features to WhatsApp Channels. The first one is voice notes or audio messages. This feature has been in development since at least October last year, as indicated by version 2.23.23.2 of WhatsApp beta for Android.
While channel admins could previously send text messages and media to their followers, the introduction of voice notes offers a new way to interact with audiences. The inclusion of polls is the next feature, allowing channel admins to quickly gauge the mood of their audience. Despite being a staple in WhatsApp group chats, it's now extended to Channels. Participants can select multiple options at once, based on the poll shared by Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg also mentioned that channel owners can now set multiple admins, benefiting large corporations and brands that need constant communication with their customers. Lastly, he discussed how people can add channel posts to their Status. This feature was seen in action through a beta version released in December, where developers added more context to Status updates pulled from a channel update.
While no specific timeline is provided for the rollout of these additions, it is evident that they are officially out of the beta phase. The stable version updates for Android, iOS, WhatsApp Web, and desktop apps may take days to weeks. Most changes focus on channel owners, enhancing engagement between brands and their customers on WhatsApp's one-way broadcasting tool.
